CBCF CIBC Run for the Cure

Date: Oct 03,2010

CBCF CIBC Run for the Cure

Over 30,000 people will be running or walking to create a future without breast cancer at the 18th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 3th, 2010.

The first Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Run, held in Toronto’s High Park in 1992, drew 1,500 participants and raised $83,000. Last year, more than 170,000 Canadians ran in support of breast cancer research, education and awareness programs raising a record $28.5 million. Of that $5.1 million was raised through the Toronto Run, which is held at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square and attracts more than 30,000 participants. The Run is also held at other GTA sites including Oshawa (Durham Region), Brampton, and in the Burlington/Hamilton/Oakville area.

How To Register
To register as an individual or as a Team or make a donation, individuals can visit www.cbcf.org. The website provides tips on fundraising for those who are new to the Run. Participants are encouraged to start fundraising early to be eligible for early bird prizes and incentive prizes. Run brochures can be found at various locations throughout Toronto and York Region such as CIBC branches and Running Room stores.

Funds raised through the Run are invested by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in the best breast cancer research, education and awareness initiatives in the country. For example, one Toronto researcher recently completed the world’s first study that compared original breast cancer tumours with suspected tumours that recurred elsewhere in the body. He found that, based on the biopsy of the second tumour, 20 per cent of the women needed a significant change in their treatment. In some cases, this was a change in drug treatment, and in others, the biopsy showed the woman did not actually have an advanced cancer, but a benign condition. The findings of this study, funded by the Foundation, could help clinicians deliver the right treatment to the right patient at the right time, and avoid unnecessary treatments and distress.

About The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1986 as the first organization in the country devoted exclusively to the funding of breast cancer research, education and awareness initiatives. The Foundation continues to blaze new trails in breast cancer and breast health by directing donor dollars to world-class researchers and clinicians who are contributing to groundbreaking progress in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care. Since 2000, the Foundation has directed nearly $60 million to the cause in Ontario alone as a result of fundraising initiatives like our signature event, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, hundreds of thousands of donors and the efforts of a committed volunteer network numbering in the thousands.
