Founded in 1989, The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival aims to provide the best possible environment for the production and presentation of new and challenging performance works, and is dedicated to the promotion and prosperity of the independent theatre
community via an annual theatre festival
. The Fringe is Toronto’s largest theatre festival
with nearly 150 national and international theatre
companies participating and an annual ticketed attendance of more than 57,000 enthusiastic patrons.
The Fringe’s primary roles are to provide all artists with the opportunity to perform and also to encourage the development of new theatre
patrons. We aim to provide a festival
that is well marketed and well organized. Here, artists may develop their skills and execute an independent production within a professional environment. Since 1989, over 1800 companies have participated in the Fringe and we have returned nearly $3,500,000 in box office revenue back to the artists. In addition to the festival
, the Fringe also coordinates the annual New Play and 24 Hour Playwriting competitions to encourage the development of new scripts. Furthermore, the Fringe produces the Next Stage Theatre Festival. The Next Stage Theatre Festival’s goal is to provide another production opportunity to these companies and artists so that they may be able to reach a broader audience, build upon their previous efforts and success, and to continue to develop their skills and career.
The Fringe and Next Stage both play a vital role in the independent theatre
community of Ontario and we pride ourselves on our ability to remain a strong, integral part of the development of Canadian art and artists. The Toronto Fringe is also an important stop on the national Fringe circuit which runs coast-to-coast from June through September. The Canadian Fringe circuit allows national and international artists to explore new ideas and to share their artistic vision and culture with artists and audiences from other communities.
The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival is a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe® Festivals (CAFF), the Toronto Theatre Alliance (TTA), The Toronto Arts Coalition (TAC) and Theatre Ontario.
