Visual Arts Curriculum

The Rosedale Day School provides a well-rounded art program in our beautiful art studio. Students are introduced to both historic and contemporary artists for inspiration.

The goals of the program are to:

Foster creativity and artistic development from a young age
Provide a strong art history and cultural context to create art
Engage students with innovative projects
Be in line with the art education ideas of the Ontario Curriculum
Provide students with rich interaction with Exhibitions displayed at the Art Gallery of Ontario
Find cross curricular links to enhance the students’ deep understanding and critical thinking skills
Special Features of the Program:

AGO visits

The goal of visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario every year is to create the opportunity for the students to create artwork inspired by artists whose work they have seen in person. Having the AGO close by is a great asset to the Art Program at RDS. Annually, the artist inspiration unit is adjusted to reflect exhibitions on display at the gallery.
Art Show

Every year students create group and solo art works to be displayed in the Annual Art Show.

All students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 participate in the music program at RDS, developing vocal and instrumental skills as they progress from the primary to the junior grades. From grade 4 to grade 8, students learn to play a variety of orchestra instruments.

Features of the program:

Vocal instruction from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2
Reading musical notation beginning in Grade 1 with recorder instruction
ORFF instrumentation in Grade 2
Ukulele instruction in Grade 3
Orchestra instruments (brass, woodwind, percussion) from Grades 4 through 8
Students learn music history and theory beginning in Grade 4, and there is a focus on a variety of genres throughout the program, from classical, to jazz, to pop.
