Transform students through the power of nature! Apply your teaching skills to nature-based educational programming at Evergreen Brick Works. During school visits, Outdoor Teaching Assistants will support curriculum-based activities, with an approach that is place-based, ecological, hands-on, physically active and arts-infused. Activities include working with plants, cooking, building, hiking, biking and science-based field studies. Programs are offered mainly to students in grades 1-6 with some exceptions. Outdoor Teaching Assistants play a key role in Evergreen’s efforts to reconnect Toronto’s children to nature – which has never been more important.
What you bring: You’ve got strong teaching skills and an enthusiasm for nature, with some knowledge of areas like ecology, natural history and physical geography—but much of this can be learned on the job. You’re interested in place-based, hands-on learning. You are also a team player and reflective practitioner, learning by doing, debriefing each day and continually developing our program and your skills.
When & where: Teaching assistants commit to at least 6 full days (Tuesday to Friday) of school programs over the fall/winter season (the more the better!), and participate in an on-the-job training/orientation session. Activities are based at Evergreen Brick Works (550 Bayview Ave) with explorations into the ravine system. A typical day is from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
How we’ll support you: There are a couple orientation sessions scheduled from September to November. Orientation takes place on Tuesday September 15th from 5:00pm – 7:00 pm at Evergreen Brick Works. There will be a tentative training on Sunday September 27th. A second orientation will take place on Wednesday October 7th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
Evergreen education staff will provide the overall program leadership while assistants will primarily work with small groups of students who are engaged in hands-on experiences. There will be continual opportunities for de-briefing your work and receiving feedback from staff.
Perks: Be a part of expanding an exciting educational program into its fifth year at EBW, build your teaching skills and be a part of inspiring children/young people and seeing the transformative power of nature-based programs.
Good to know: Most activities are outside, sun, rain or snow, so be prepared! Successful candidates will be required to have an acceptable Police Records Check. Free shuttle bus transportation from Broadview Station is available. Volunteers in this role will have transferable skills to our Summer Camp and Weekend Programs.
