This will be the third year of “In The Can”: Singers for Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada. The first two years were magical successes, and we have so far raise $8000 for the cause.

The launch of the annual fundraiser was a magical night, and featured some of the city’s finest singers and songwriters showcasing some of their best new, and mostly unreleased work. Laila Biali, Barbra Lica, Devin Cuddy, and Alex Pangman, to name a few. The idea was to invite the singers to showcase a yet to be released song, workshop it so to speak, or debut something on it’s way in or out of the recording studio (hence, “in the can”.) I expected a special night, but certainly not the degree of connection, heart and vulnerability that the musicians put forward.

This year, we have some new exciting guests as well as some of the favourites from last year. Official lineup will be announced soon, as well as some fantastic silent auction donations! (Some favourites from last year included Escape Room passes, hotel stays, art work, a guitar from Long and McQuade, vouchers for dance classes and music lessons, and gift baskets.)

The Children’s Aid Foundation is Canada’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth involved with the child welfare system. It supports and delivers a broad range of high-impact programs and services that directly serve vulnerable children and youth across Canada. It’s programs address the many complex needs in the four key needs areas of education, healing and recovery, enrichment and prevention. Children’s Aid Foundation works in partnership with over 60 child welfare agencies and youth-serving partners Canada-wide to impact its target population.

Funds raised from the event will go to the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada and help support the following areas:

Prevention – When families in crisis receive the support they need, they have vastly improved chances of keeping their family together.

Healing & Recovery – Nearly every child in care has experienced trauma at a young age. Early childhood trauma has profound, complicated effects on kids that can linger throughout their entire lives. These issues need to be addressed so they can go on to live healthier lives.

Enrichment – Most of us take swimming lessons, sports, and music lessons for granted as part of growing up – but too often, kids in care are sidelined. And yet, these activities are critical for kids in the child welfare system to help build confidence, self-esteem, an identity outside of being a “foster kid,” and a healthier body and mind.

Education – An education can elevate young people above the circumstances they were born into. It can mean access to better jobs and financial stability but it also helps young people overcome the devastating effects of childhood trauma and influences other markers of well-being like physical and mental health.

See you there!

Melissa
