ABI ADULT DAY SERVICE PROGRAM

September – January 2019

3 Volunteers required on a weekly basis for 16 weeks

Commit to volunteering either:

1 person Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

1 person Mondays 10:00 to 3:30pm.

1 person Wednesdays 9:30am, to 3:30pm

1 person Thursdays 12:00 pm- 3:30pm

Cota is an accredited community-based organization that has been supporting adults with mental health and cognitive challenges to live well within their communities for over 40 years. We provide person-centred supports that assist individuals to find inspiration and hope in their inherent strengths and support them to pursue meaningful change in their lives, as they define it. We also work collaboratively with our funders, our partners and other stakeholders, across the provincial health and social service systems, to inspire positive change in the way that services are delivered to individuals living with mental health and cognitive challenges.

About the Program:

The ABI Adult Day Services (ADS) program offers a supportive and creative group environment for people to engage in meaningful activities, explore strengths and develop new skills. The program is located at Providence Healthcare at 3276 St. Clair Avenue East. The Adult Day Service program requires 3 volunteers to support staff and clients during group sessions.

Skills:
•Consistently patient, caring and understanding
•Non-judgmental of group member beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and actions
•Comfortable listening to difficult life experiences and/or the expression of intense emotion
•Honest
•Approachable
•Strong Communication skills
•Good English language skills
•Initiative
•Basic understanding of Acquired Brain Injury and interest in working with this population
•Conscious of safety risks and concerns
•Punctual
•Reliable
•Basic cooking and cleaning skills

Duties:Mondays 10:00 am to 3:30pm “Start Me Up” Social Recreational Group

Staff and Client Support Volunteer:
•Commit to volunteering between the hours of 10:00 am to 3:30 pm every Monday for a 16 week term. (hours can be negotiated based on availability)
•Answer the door as needed
•Support clients to socialize with each other at the direction of staff
•Inform staff of client issues that staff have not observed so that staff can respond accordingly
•Support clients to navigate the program space (sometimes pushing wheelchairs)
•Support clients with physical tasks they cannot complete independently such as preparing coffee putting on, taking off coats, buttoning jackets
•Wipe down tables, empty and clean coffee maker, general tidying of program space
•Put away games, sweep the floor and assist staff to move tables at the end of the day
•Assist with preparation of and cleanup of light meal such as soup and sandwiches

Wednesdays 9:30am to 3:30pm “Knowing Me Knowing You” Social Recreational Group

Staff and Client Support Volunteer:

•Commit to volunteering between the hours of 9:30 am to 3:15 pm every Wednesday for a 16 week term. (hours can be negotiated based on availability)
•Answer the door as needed
•Support clients to socialize with each other at the direction of staff
•Inform staff of client issues that staff have not observed so that staff can respond accordingly
•Support clients to navigate the program space
•Support clients with physical tasks they cannot complete independently such as preparing coffee of buttoning jackets
•Support staff at mealtime to set out cutlery, napkins, dinner rolls, cups, juice and to serve food.
•Hand wash, dry and put away cooking tools.
•Wipe down counters and stove top after meal preparation
•Sweep kitchen floor after meal preparation
•Put away games, sweep the floor and assist staff to move tables at the end of the day
•General tidying of program space
•Assist with preparation of and cleanup of light meal such as soup and sandwiches

Staff and Client Support Volunteer:

Thursdays 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm “The Brains Are A Changin” Brain Fitness Group
•Commit to volunteering between the hours of 12:00pm to 3:30 pm every Thursday for a 16 week term.
•Answer the door
•Serve water to clients at the beginning of the session
•Provide one to one support to clients during group activities as directed by staff
•Inform staff of client issues that staff have not observed so that staff can respond accordingly
•Support clients to navigate the program space
•Support clients with physical tasks they cannot complete independently such as preparing coffee of buttoning jackets
•Assist staff to put away program supplies and move table at the end of the session
•Assist with preparation of and cleanup of light meal such as soup and sandwiches
